Fields Report

Computer science can be defined by many as the study of computing, programming, and computation in correspondence with computer systems. It has a strong foundation in mathematics, and may not always focus on computer systems directly. Software engineering is anything to do with programming, writing or editing software, or using software to improve everyday things or the most complicated things. Information technology is the use of computers and telecommunications to retrieve, store, or send information. The difference among these is that computer science studies basically everything about computers such as graphic design or even the hardware of the computer. Software engineering is clearly focused on the software aspect of the computer. It is also not only specific to everyday computers, software can be written for the military, automobiles, or for clothing with technology embedded into it. Lastly, information technology is what we use to stay interconnected in the world. It mainly only involves computers, phones, and microphones. The people who work in IT are the people you and I would talk to on the phone when we have an internet issue. That, in my opinion, is the biggest difference because not often do you talk on the phone with a computer scientist or software engineer. One field of computer science is graphics. Graphics involves computer science because graphic designers use computers to visualize difficult concepts that may not be as comprehendible beforehand. Another field is programming languages. This is a very important field since computers would not even function without programming. New languages are developed to create new software that would probably be too difficult to create with the languages we have now. Lastly, artificial intelligence is another field in computer science. AI could be machines solving and/or looking for solutions to problems or it could be machines learning how to do things like how a human does. The field that I am most interested in is artificial intelligence. I think that after college I want to go into the automobile industry and help write software for cars. Ironically, I used to say that I would never trust a car to drive me somewhere without it crashing until I learned that these self-driving cars will not only obey all the laws better than any human will, they will also identify and avoid crashes faster than a human could. I also think it is amazing that we have machines that can diagnose problems or medical conditions better than doctors can. I think that going into the field of artificial intelligence I have a chance at making a big impact on the world or make a huge discovery. Some would argue that it is just taking away jobs, but it makes less sense to opt for going the route that we know has less accuracy and precision.
