Phonics

What is Phonics?

Phonics is teaching students the relationship between the sounds they hear and the letters that represent those sounds.

Why is Phonics important?

Educators and legislators have debated the importance of phonics over the past few decades.  Teaching students how written letters correspond to the sounds they hear enables students to learn to decode words.  Decoding words is one of the strategies readers use in order to understand what is written.
