What is fluency?

According to Reading First, fluency is the ability to read texts accurately and quickly.  It provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.  Fluent readers recognize words and comprehend at the same time.

Why is it important to develop fluency?

Fluency affects comprehension.  When a student is struggling with decoding each word, then it is difficult for that student to understand what is read.
